This week started with an impromptu farm visit, the second in two weeks, joining DEFRA Minister Stephen Morgan on a trip to the Leckford Estate.  It remains the case that is a very challenging year for farming, and it was interesting to hear how a wet Winter, late frosts and then prolonged dry periods have cumulatively impacted yields.  I did not miss the opportunity to highlight to the Minister what enormous water stress this constituency is under, and on Wednesday the Environment Agency officially declared us to be in a drought. The water levels in the Test are at a critical level, and I very much hope that next week will indeed bring some rain.

The threat of wildfires is as real here as it is in France and Spain and I am very conscious constituents are reporting some properly idiotic behaviours.  I know the Fire Service in Hampshire is under real stretch, not helped by people deliberately lighting fires in some locations, like the Sports Centre in Southampton. The grass is so dry that even the slightest spark could cause devastation and it is terrible that stretched resources are having to be directed to what amounts to thoughtless behaviour.

This weekend there is the annual community day at Abbotswood, which is always well attended and great fun, and the wonderful Trout N About returns to Stockbridge.  I know they will bring lots of residents out to enjoy the sunshine, the local produce and activities, but a big reminder to please remember sunscreen.  I was shocked to hear from a constituent recently about the increase in skin cancers, particularly in younger people, and how important it is to wear factor 50 when outside in the sunshine.

Whilst this week I have been at my Parliamentary neighbour Darren Paffey's 2026 Summer School, next week is my annual work experience programme, which I am very much looking forward to.  I recognise the highlight of the week is the trip to Parliament but I am hoping to give the students involved a taste of what it is to be a constituency MP as well.
